The City of Burnaby honoured the Canadian women's soccer team for its gold-medal Tokyo Olympics victory today (August 6) by hanging a giant medal on the exterior of its community centre named after the national-team captain.

The Christine Sinclair Community Centre near Burnaby Lake—renamed in May this year to recognize the international stature of the Burnaby-born and -raised soccer star—was bedecked with the mammoth gold medal inscribed "Tokyo 2020" just hours after Canada took the gold from favoured Sweden, 3-2, in a penalty-kick shootout after a 2-2 draw in regulation time.

Burnaby mayor Mike Hurley helped unveil the medal and an accompanyinmg giant banner that reads, "Congratulations Canada women's soccer bringing home the gold".

“Earlier this year, we named this facility after Christine Sinclair in recognition of her incredible accomplishments both on and off the pitch," Hurley said in a news release. "Today, she has added another historic achievement to her résumé: she is an Olympic champion. Congratulations to Christine and all members of Team Canada. Your performance has inspired the next generation of Burnaby athletes.”

Sinclair has been involved with the Canadian women's national soccer team for 21 years. She holds international records for national-team appearances (304), most international goals scored by a man or woman (187), and has won three Olympic medals (one gold and two bronze). She has also scored in five FIFA World Cup editions, only the second player, man or woman, to have ever done that (tied with Brazil's Marta).

Christine Sinclair was mobbed by well-wishers at Vancouver International Airport in 2012 when she returned from London after leading the Canadian women's soccer team to a bronze medal at the London Summer Olympics.
