Canada has reached the top of the Olympic podium in women's soccer at Yokohama International Stadium.

It came after Canada triumphed over Sweden in the shootout.

Vancouver's Julia Grosso is the hero after scoring the winning goal, which glanced off the right arm of Swedish goalie Hedvig Lindahl.

This occurred in sudden death as the teams were tied 2-2 after the first five penalty kicks.

It's Canada's first gold in this sport in the history of the Summer Games. And it followed bronze-medal performances at the London and Rio Olympics.

Canadian goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé also came up big, just as she did in the quarter-final match in the penalty kicks against Brazil. She only allowed two goals on six Swedish shots in the shootout.

Canada was only able to survive because of Deanne Rose's perfect kick in an upper corner of the net in the fifth round, leading to the sudden-death round.

It was  remarkable turnaround for Canada because the first half belonged to Sweden.

The Swedes opened up a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute when forward Stina Blackstenius converted a crossing pass from Kosavare Asilani.

Then in the 67th minute, Canadian midfielder Jessie Fleming put a penalty kick in the back of the net, just as she did in the semi-final match against the United States.

Fleming's goal came after a video review of a takedown of captain Christine Sinclair.

Sweden had more scoring opportunities than Canada in extra time, but was unable to find the back of the net.

Sweden went into the match ranked fifth in the FIFA world rankings, whereas Canada was ranked eighth.
