Vancouver has announced the opening of cooling centres in reponse to Environment Canada's issuance of a heat warning today (June 27).

The alert covered Metro Vancouver, including Vancouver, New Westminster, Burnaby, the North Shore, Coquitlam, Surrey, Maple Ridge, Langley, Richmond, and Delta.

The area around Howe Sound is also covered by the warning.

The alert on the Ministry of Environment and natural Resources reads: "A strong ridge of high pressure over the south coast this afternoon will be replaced by an upper low pressure system on Tuesday. Consequently, afternoon temperatures as high as 34 degrees away from the water will lower by about 10 degrees on Tuesday as cooler marine air moves in from the Pacific."

The City of Vancouver's heat-resources webpage said that cooling centres have been activated at the following community centres and other special locations: Britannia, Carnegie, Champlain Heights, Coal Harbour, Evelyne Saller, the Gathering Place, Hillcrest Centre, Kensington, Kerrisdale, Killarney, Marpole-Oakridge, Mount PLeasanr, RayCam, Roundhouse, Sunset, and Thunderbird.

Vancouver's public libraries also have cooling locations; go here for more information on locations and hours.
