Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Matiss Kivlenieks dies in fireworks blast

It occurred at a house party in Novi, Michigan on July 4.

      Hockey fans are mourning the death of a 24-year-old goaltender in a freak accident.

      The Detroit News has reported that Matiss Kivlenieks died of a "percussive injury" from a fireworks blast at a July 4 house party in Novi, Michigan.

      According to the local police department, he suffered major heart and lung damage.

      Nobody else was injured.

      "We are shocked and saddened by the loss of Matiss Kivlenieks, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his mother, Astrida, his family and friends during this devastating time," Blue Jackets president of hockey operations John Davidson said on the team's website. "Kivi was an outstanding young man who greeted every day and everyone with a smile and the impact he had during his four years with our organization will not be forgotten."

      Columbus signed him as a free agent in 2017.
