Conservative MP Sir David Amess stabbed to death in Essex in southeast England
It comes five years after a Labour politician, Jo Cox, was murdered
Another British politician has been murdered.
Sir David Amess was stabbled multiple times while meeting constituents in Belfairs Methodist Church in the town of Leigh-on-Sea. He died at the scene, according to police.
A 25-year-old man is in custody in connection with the killing and a knife was recovered. His name has not been released.
Amess, 69, has represented the Conservatives in Parliament since 1983. He was a strong supporter of Brexit.
He also campaigned vocally for a statue in honour of Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who saved tens of thousands of Jews during the Second World War. A memorial to Wallenberg was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth in 1997.
He's the second British MP to be murdered in five years.
In 2016, a Labour MP, Jo Cox, was shot and stabbed to death in Birstall where she was planning to meet constituents. Her assassin was a far-right activist, who was sentenced to life in prison.
