A motorist has caused flooding in a couple of homes after his vehicle struck a fire hydrant in South Burnaby.

Burnaby RCMP shared video over Twitter of the hydrant gushing water near the corner of Marine Drive and Royal Oak just after midnight.

A 61-year-old man has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and refusal to provide a breath sample.

"As if we weren't drenched enough... a single vehicle has struck a fire hydrant," the Mounties declared over social media. "The driver tried to run. He's in custody now and alcohol is suspected."

      No names have been released.
