Emergency shelter resources added in B.C. as winter weather-response spaces open

The province has announced the addition of emergency shelter spaces to its roster of weather-response shelters for those experiencing homelessness during the winter season.

The more than 1,900 temporary shelter spaces that usually open every winter due to cold and rainy weather will be joined by about 360 "extreme weather response" shelter spaces.

News of the seasonal opening came in a joint release dated today (November 4) from the Ministry of Attorney General and Responsible for Housing and B.C. Housing.

Temporary shelter spaces—which are often open around the clock and provide meals—are in addition to the approximately 2,250 permanent shelter spaces for those experiencing homelessness throughout B.C.

The 360 emergency spaces are mostly available for just overnight use from November 1 to March 31 and open according to need caused by extreme weather, usually freezing temperatures. Communities decide on when to announce extreme-weather alerts and how many spaces to activate.

Some nonprofit groups in areas of B.C. experiencing early extreme weather-related conditions were provided funding to enable opening spaces by October 1 this year.
