Fire burns in Gastown

      A major blaze has broken out in the oldest part of Vancouver.

      Video images show a great deal of smoke billowing into the air from a building in historic Gastown.

      Fire Chief Karen Fry tweeted that several occupants have been rescued.

      Motorists are being urged to stay out of the area.

      The building at the corner of Abbott and Water Street houses several businesses—including the Flying Pig restaurant, Lemongrass House, and Australian Boot Company—and an 89-unit SRO on the upper floors.

      The fire has been videotaped different angles, including from nearby buildings and a SeaBus travelling across Burrard Inlet.

      Update

      Fire Chief Karen Fry told reporters that five people have been hospitalized, including two in serious condition.

      Several people are still unaccounted for.
