Firefighters are battling a large blaze that broke out in the Queensborough area of New Westminster tonight (October 12).

Around 8 p.m., New Westminster Firefighters began advising people to avoid the area of Boyne Street, near the Annacis Island Swing Bridge, as emergency crews attended the location.

The City of New Westminster stated that it is a major fire in the area of Derwent Way and Salter Street. The city is advising residents to avoid the area, to remain indoors, and to close all windows.

New Westminster Fire and Rescue confirmed that the fire is at a plastic recycling depot.

This fire follows one month after a massive fire developed at the Westminster Pier on September 13. Smoke from that fire had added to the smoke from U.S. wildfires that was already shrouding Metro Vancouver.

The fire had damaged the 100-year-old wharf structure as well as a public art installation—a W made from shipping containers—that had to be removed.

The New Westminster Police Department had arrested a suspect on September 13 but released him on conditions.
