There will be an independent investigation into the death of a man in his 40s in the Downtown Eastside.

According to Vancouver police, officers responded to a call of an assault with a weapon inside the Patricia Hotel just after 4 p.m. on Thursday (May 5).

Upon their arrival, police were confronted by a man.

"An altercation ensued and shots were fired," the VPD stated in a news release. "A man in his forties died at the scene."

In a separate news release, the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. said that it was notified shortly after the incident.

It has launched an independent investigation, which is its statutory responsibility following any police-involved death regardless of whether there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
