For the second time in less than a week, Vancouver police have discharged firearms against a man carrying a weapon in the Downtown Eastside. This time, the person who was shot did not survive.

It occurred near the intersection of Princess Avenue and East Hastings Street. That's just two blocks away from a lengthy police standoff this weekend in which a firearm-wielding man was shot. The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is looking into both events.

According to the VPD, a 37-year-old man was acting in an "erratic and aggressive" manner before 5 a.m. today. This prompted paramedics on the scene to request the assistance of police.

“Before police arrived, the man had left his residence and went to the street with a weapon in his hand,” VPD Const. Tania Visintin said in a news release. “Reports came in that this man was chasing people with the weapon and using it in an aggressive and threatening manner. The man was subsequently shot by police."

The VPD news release did not disclose what type of weapon he was carrying.

Global News reported that the man was naked and his weapon was large—"possibly a sword".

      No names have been released.
