Injured suspect is in custody after alleged machete attack on four people in Granville Entertainment District

      Vancouver police have released more information in connection with the shooting of a suspect in the Granville Entertainment District on Saturday (August 6) night.

      In an August 7 news release, the VPD said that police fired on him after he allegedly attacked and stabbed four people inside a rooming house.

      According to police, the suspect was armed with a machete. He was still carrying the weapon when police confronted him. The suspect remains in custody after being taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

      The VPD stated that four victims are also in hospital with "serious, life-altering injuries".

      Prior to the machete attacks, the man allegedly set his suite on fire inside the rooming house near Granville and Smithe streets around 10 p.m.

      No names have been released.

      The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is conducting an investigation into this latest police-involved shooting.

      The IIO investigates all incidents involving police officers that lead to serious harm or death, regardless of who is at fault or if there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
