Today (February 12), many Asian cultures are celebrating the first day of the Lunar New Year, which ushers in the Year of the Ox in 2021.

B.C. Premier John Horgan issued a statement in response to the occasion, in light of the unusual circumstances the province is experiencing:

"Today marks the beginning of Lunar New Year and the Year of the Ox. As we continue our fight against COVID-19, we reflect on the Chinese idiom, 'the ox can turn things around.' Hardworking, strong and resilient, the ox reminds us of what we can accomplish when we work together in common purpose.

"Like many people around the province, I will miss the vibrancy and excitement of traditional Lunar New Year celebrations this year. But in order to keep our loved ones and our communities safe, we must stay the course and celebrate the holiday with the people in our household. I know people will find new and creative ways to celebrate this year, by joining online events, video chatting with their families or decorating their homes and encouraging their neighbours to do the same.

"Lunar New Year is also a time to celebrate British Columbia's rich diversity and reflect on the ways we are stronger because of the many cultures, languages and traditions that form our province. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented many challenges, one of which has been the rise of ignorant and unacceptable anti-Asian racism. Hate has no place in our province. Our government will continue to work with communities to build a province where everyone can live without fear of violence or discrimination.

"As we mark this new year, let's look forward with hope and optimism. With vaccines now available to those who need them most, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Our government will keep working to protect people's health and livelihoods, and build an economic recovery that works for everyone.

"To all those celebrating Lunar New Year, I wish you a year of good health in body and mind.

"Kung Hei Fat Choi! Gong Xi Fa Cai! Saehae bok mani badeuseyo! Chúc mừng năm mới!"
