Seven weeks after a shocking stranger attack outside the Empress Hotel in Vancouver, police have a man in custody.

Kenneth Stephen Solowan, 37, faces two counts of aggravated assault. He will be in court on August 17.

It's in connection with an alleged machete attack on a 49-year-old man and 38-year-old woman who were loading luggage into a taxi outside the hotel at 235 East Hastings Street in the Downtown Eastside.

The victims were both sent to hospital.

None of the allegations have been proven in court against Solowan.

Police say the release of security video prompted tips from the public, which led to the arrest. In the video, the suspect is seen carrying an umbrella.
