The longest-reigning monarch in British history has passed away at the age of 96.

Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral after 70 years on the throne.

It came two days after she asked Liz Truss to form a new Conservative government and become prime minister.

Family members rushed to Balmoral upon hearing that the Queen's health had taken a turn for the worse.

She is succeeded by her eldest son, who becomes King Charles III. His wife Camilla is called the Queen Consort.
