Republican Ron Paul defends Bradley Manning and Julian Assange

There's a remarkable statement by libertarian Republican Congressman Ron Paul on the American Conservative website.

"Bradley Manning hasn’t caused the death of anybody. And what he has exposed—he is the equivalent of Daniel Ellsberg, who told us the truth about Vietnam," Paul, an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, declared in a speech at the University of Florida.

Manning, a U.S. soldier, has been held without trial for two years for allegedly leaking sensitive U.S. government information to WikiLeaks.

Paul then went on to defend WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The article states that the Congressman was "chastising the government of Sweden for truckling to alleged American demands that the Aussie be extradited to the U.S. for prosecutions".

It's not the first time Paul has spoken in favour of WikiLeaks. Check out the speech below that Paul delivered in 2011 on the floor of the House of Representatives.

He should have defended Pussy Riot as well. This ( Freedom to whistle-blow and expose what is illegal )is a matter that should concern everyone. I will be there if they arrest you Charlie.

Ron Paul wasn't allowed to address his fellow Republicans at their current convention because he refused to allow Mitt Romneys' campaign people to vet his speech beforehand. Such is the state of our democracy in the "free world".
