A man who made death threats targeting a local municipal politician and the prime minister has been arrested in Metro Vancouver.

Surrey RCMP announced today (November 26) that police received a report on November 23 about threats of violence made toward a Surrey city council member and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

In an interview with Surrey Now-Leader, Coun. Jack Hundial, who is a former RCMP officer, said he received the threat on November 23.

After an investigation was launched, RCMP officers arrested a 42-year-old male suspect on November 25 for two counts of uttering threats. He was not previously known to police.

The suspect was released later that same day on conditions with a court date scheduled for the new year.

RCMP have not released the suspect’s name. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Surrey RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Surrey Now-Leader reported that Hundial was recently the subject of a Safe Surrey Coalition ad on social media, related to the transition from the Surrey RCMP to the Surrey Police Service.
