A 21-year-old male motorist was arrested after his vehicle struck and killed two 18-year-old pedestrians.

The pedestrians, male and female UBC students, were walking along Northwest Marine Drive when the collision occurred around 1:46 a.m. They were pronounced dead on the scene.

      No names have been released.

The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) is investigating. North West Marine Drive remains closed between Stadium (east) and Agronomy (west).

Police have not ruled out drugs and alcohol as factors in the crash.

In a statement, UBC president Santa Ono said that it is "difficult to comprehend and express the enormity of the loss of these two bright and promising young adults".

He expressed his "deepest and heartfelt condolences" to the two students' families, friends and loved ones.

"I know some at UBC, particularly students in residence, are just now learning of this terrible incident," Ono said. "I want you to know there are grief and trauma counselling supports available to you. Please speak to your residence life manager to access those supports as you need to."
