Russian president Vladimir Putin has ramped up his rhetoric in his war against Ukraine.

Today, he declared that he's put his nuclear arsenal on high alert in the face of Western opposition to the Russian attack.

"Western countries aren't only taking unfriendly actions against our country in the economic sphere, but top officials from leading NATO members made aggressive statements regarding our country," Putin said on Russian television.

Putin's comments drew scorn from former Ukraine president Petro Poroshenko in an interview with CNN's Fareed Zakaria.

Wearing a military vest and standing outside, Poroshenko said that all the West stands united in support of his country.

"Now it's clear, Putin has launched a war not only against Ukraine but against the West," Poroshenko said.

He also said that Putin's comments create a "completely new security situation".

"This nuclear madness of Putin poses a much greater threat to the world than bin Laden," Poroshenko said.
