Looking for an out-of-this world experience? Star Trek stars William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy are beaming down to Vancouver for Creation Entertainment’s Official Star Trek Convention, June 25 to 27 at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre.

No strangers to our area, Shatner and Nimoy bring with them a wealth of local experience. The soon-to-be-retired Nimoy recently completed filming on the swan song to his long career, the Vancouver-shot FOX-TV show Fringe.

Shatner, born in Montreal, has had a long history with Vancouver and British Columbia, including a locally-shot Super Valu commercial in the ”˜70s, a Nimmo Bay plotline in Boston Legal, a starring role in the 2010 Olympic closing ceremonies, and, just last week, outspoken support of federal NDP fisheries and oceans critic Fin Donnelly’s bill to require closed-containment systems for salmon farms.

"My rage is against companies that have no conscience about what they're doing and that the bottom line is the only thing they think of," Shatner said during a news conference call on June 10. “What we must do is ensure that the farmed salmon do not destroy the wild salmon.”

The 79-year-old Shatner’s popularity is even filtering up to, quite literally, the highest levels of Canadian government: a drive to help nominate Shatner Governor General of Canada has attracted over 46,000 supporters on Facebook.

While the Star Trek convention runs throughout the weekend, the headline appearances of Shatner and Nimoy (both solo and together on stage) are set for Sunday June 27.

Erin Ferries, spokesperson for Creation Entertainment, says, "Bill and Leonard are an inspiration for all Star Trek fans and when they both attend one of our conventions together it is truly a magical experience. This appearance in Vancouver is long overdue because the area's fans have been so supportive of Star Trek for decades."

The convention also features a wealth other Star Trek celebrities: Connor Trinneer (Star Trek: Enterprise); Armin Shimerman, Jeffrey Combs, Vaughn Armstrong, Max Grodénchik, Casey Biggs, and Chase Masterson (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine); Barbara March and Gwynyth Walsh (Star Trek: The Next Generation); and Jacob Kogan (young Spock in last-year’s J.J. Abrams–helmed Star Trek reboot).

It's amazing what both the Shat and Nimoy have accomplished. The Shat has enjoyed a great deal of popularity in the last decade. Pretty incredible since he hasn't been in Trek since 94. Nimoy's appearence in the last Trek movie gave it the heard that it needed while still moving the franchise in a new direction.
