A Canadian e-commerce company is committing to establishing a permanent presence on the West Coast.
Shopify, which provides e-commerce platforms for online sales and retail point-of-sale systems, announced on January 28 that it will open a permanent Vancouver office at Bentall Centre (Tower 4, 1055 Dunsmuir Street).
While the company already has employees who have been working remotely in the area, the new facility will focus on software development.
The office plans to hire 1,000 employees, including data engineers, backend developers, mobile developers, web developers, product designers, and product managers.
The facility will also host technology and entrepreneurship events free of charge, and work with B.C. merchants and partners.
“What’s unique about our announcement is that we’re committing to building a top tier RnD [research and development] team,” Shopify UX vice president Lynsey Thornton stated in a news release. Thornton, who was the first employee in Vancouver, will head the Vancouver office.
The office will consist of four floors spanning over 70,000 square feet and is slated to open late this year.
Shopify launched in 2006 and its headquarters are in Ottawa, Ontario.
