Defamation Law
People's Law School, 900 Howe Defamation Law
The law of defamation is the area of law that balances the protection of reputation and freedom of expression. Defamation law gives a person whose reputation has been wrongfully attacked the right to take legal action against those responsible.
This area of law has gained increasing importance in the age of the Internet and social media, where information can be widely disseminated in a matter of seconds.
Of particular importance to journalists, bloggers and other public commentators, this session focuses on outlining the basic principles of defamation law and the relevant defences to a claim in defamation.
