The Conduit shows Wii shooters require better control schemes

The Conduit (Sega; Wii; rated teen)

There aren’t many shooter games available yet for Nintendo’s Wii, and while The Conduit is a solid effort that offers plenty of action, it also serves as an example of how shooters must to be adapted if they are to work well on the console.

Playing as Michael Ford, a cop turned hero in a conspiracy story involving aliens and viral infections, you’ll use the remote and nunchuk controllers to wield all manner of weapons.

Flicking the nunchuk to throw grenades and the remote to initiate a melee attack makes for nice use of the motion-sensing controllers, but the remote isn’t suited to having to switch between weapons and firing modes. In a firefight, you’ll find yourself reloading when you’re trying to switch weapons.

The Wii controllers just weren’t designed for this kind of use, so future Wii shooters will need to have simpler, more refined control schemes.

The Conduit has a customizable control scheme. While other shooters could use better control schemes, The Conduit is not one of them.
