R.I.P. Body Snatchers actor Kevin McCarthy, French director Claude Chabrol

The film world mourned the loss of two prominent figures this past weekend.

Seattle-born stage and screen actor Kevin McCarthy, most famous for his role in the cult sci-fi movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers, died Saturday (September 11) in Hyannis, Massachusetts. He was 96 years old. The cause of death has not been disclosed yet.

He was nominated for a best-supporting actor Oscar for his role in Death of a Salesman. He also starred in horror classics such as 1978's Piranha and 1981's The Howling.

Meanwhile, French director Claude Chabrol, who helped launch France's New Wave (nouvelle vague) cinema in the 1950s along with Jean-Luc Goddard, Franí§ois Truffaut, and more, died in Paris on Sunday (September 12). He was 80 years old and reportedly in good health. The cause of death has not been announced.

The former critic for Cahiers du cinema was often compared to Alfred Hitchcock for his suspenseful thrillers. He made over 80 films during his acclaimed career, including Le boucher (The Butcher) and La femme infidí¨le (The Unfaithful Wife).
