Experience silent cinema from a bygone era—complete with live orchestra—at Live Cinema with the Alloy Orchestra. This special presentation at the Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour Street) features the Alloy Orchestra, a three-piece band from Cambridge, Massachusetts, making a stop in Vancouver from April 13 to 16.

The Alloy Orchestra, which consists of accordion, electronica, clarinet, and junk percussion (think musical saw, a drawer of spoons, and wine bottles), will play along to three programs, plus the opener of the 2012 Reel 2 Real International Film Festival for Youth.

Not Just for Kids, a program of silent shorts, will open the Reel 2 Real Festival on Friday (April 10) at 6:30 p.m. This fun-filled family program features the Alloy Orchestra performing along to Buster Keaton’s One Week, The Pet by Windsor McCay, Artheme Swallows his Clarinet, and The Red Spectre.

On Saturday (February 14) at 9:15 p.m., the Alloy Orchestra will accompany The Phantom of the Opera. The Rupert Julian-directed black-and-white stars Lon Chaney, Mary Philbin, and Norman Kerry, in Gaston Leroux’s gothic classic about a phantom that haunts the Paris Opera House.

Director Fritz Lang’s visionary masterpiece, Metropolis, will screen Sunday (April 15) at 6:30 p.m. The newly-restored masterpiece, made in 1927 Germany, includes 25 minutes of newly discovered footage and a stunning, progressive score by the Alloy Orchestra.

The Alloy Orchestra will complete its residency at the Vancity Theatre with From Morning to Midnight, Karheinz Martin’s experimental film based on Georg Kaiser’s controversial 1919 stage play. From Morning to Midnight plays on Monday (April 16) at 7 p.m.

Tickets for Live Cinema with the Alloy Orchestra are $20 for adults and $15 for students/seniors. Tickets for Not Just for Kids can be purchased on the Reel 2 Real website, while tickets for The Phantom of the Opera, Metropolis, and From Morning to Midnight can be purchased on the Vancity Theatre website.
