Video: Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke heat up the MTV VMAs while other celebs fume

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Okay, this is the first time I've ever written anything about Miley Cyrus, daughter of Billy Ray and best known to the kids as Hannah Montana.

But now that she's 20 years old, Miley wants to take her place alongside Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Madonna who make money by turning their singing careers into striptease acts.

This practice resulted in a rebuke last year from Adele, who promised never to do it herself.

Of course, Adele has a great voice, so she doesn't feel that she needs to rely on gimmicks.

Naturally, last night's bump and grind between Miley and Robin Thicke on the MTV Video Music Awards has lit up the Twitterverse.

And it hasn't gone over well with other celebrities.

Brooke Shields, who played Hannah's mom, told the Today show that she didn't approve of Miley's antics.

Many people in the audience didn't look very impressed, judging from the photos I saw.

The Parents' Television Council is also in a rage.

And Miley clearly upstaged Robin, so he's probably ticked off, too.

But hey, if she wanted to transform her image and join the pantheon of those who can sell out stadiums within a day, the former tween idol just moved a little bit closer to her goal.

And if a bunch of old folks are upset about that, it's only going to make her more appealing to the next generation.

      Just ask the Biebs.

      This is sad.
Mr. Smith, how long did it take you to research and write this piece? Don't you have better things to write/think about? Just because every single other media outlet in the world jumped on the HEY, LOOK WHAT MILEY DID!!!! bandwagon doesn't mean the Straight has to, too. Are you that desperate for hits?
      Who needs integrity, right?

      who cares?!

Miley and the Biebs are desperate for attention.

      Hi really?

If we generate enough page views, it enables me to write articles like this:

      http://www.straight.com/news/414836/bc-liberal-governments-disorganized-...

      And this:

      http://www.straight.com/news/414656/slow-economic-times-its-not-out-line...

      And this:

      http://www.straight.com/news/410841/federal-conservative-leadership-race...

      And this:
      http://www.straight.com/news/410701/ex-bc-ndp-president-sav-dhaliwal-say...

If we don't have enough page views, I won't be able to produce articles like that in the future.

It probably took me 20 minutes to write the article above. If you don't like it, I suggest you click the links to find something more to your tastes.

You can dress this up as an issue of "integrity" or you can see it as a media outlet that knows it must do certain things to avoid extinction. I'm proud of what the Straight has done over the past 44 years. I want it to be around for another 45 years.

Does this make sense to you? Possibly not. But at least it will provide answers to your questions.

If we didn't have integrity, we would have just deleted your comment. Instead, we posted it and responded to it.

Yes, it makes sense to me, because I'm not a moron. It doesn't make it okay though, does it? I find your dismissal disturbing.

I kind of like the song lyrics and do think that Miley is a pretty (innocent) girl. There are ways to be sexy and provocative without giving away your class. She's either too young to know that or has already made her choice. Bad attention is still attention.
