      They originally composed it for the Drifters, who declined the song.

      King's version was a hit in 1961, reaching Number 1 on the R&B chart. Yesterday, he died at the age of 76.

      Ben E. King's version of "Stand By Me" remains popular more than 50 years after it was recorded.
