Following Batman v Superman, Hans Zimmer calls it quits on capes and tights

Hopefully sad Ben Affleck won’t get sadder with a lead composer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice calling it quits from the superhero biz.

Having written music for over 150 films since the 1980s, German composer and record producer Hans Zimmer has said he has had enough with capes, tights, and overused CGI.

“I did Batman Begins with Chris [Nolan] 12 years ago,” Zimmer said in an interview with BBC HARDtalk. “The Dark Knight trilogy might be three movies to you; to me it was 11 years of my life.

“I might as well say it,” he continued. “I have officially retired from the superhero business.”

Other notable films Zimmer has worked on include The Lion King, Gladiator, The Last Samurai, Inception, and Interstellar.

With Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice—both directed by Zack Snyder—Zimmer mentioned working on it was “very hard for me to do, to try to find a new language, to say something.”

And, while the film garnered over $500 million at the box office in less than a week, as far storytelling and compelling cinema goes, it tanked. Comedian Tracy Morgan, in his appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, said “I walked away from that angry like I just saw Pacquiao vs Mayweather again.”

In a post on Reddit.com, one user by the name of Andre_iC, commented: “BvS - a movie so bad it made Hans Zimmer retire from superhero movies.”

DC has had a hard time producing movies of critical acclaim (think Green Lantern, Man of Steel, and now Batman v. Superman). Compare that run to Marvel’s Avengers megaseries, and one has to wonder if Zimmer is distancing himself from the DC name with good reason.

Save it for the good stuff, Hans.”
