Homeless in Vancouver: I DID NOT find a prototype iPhone phablet

No one doubts Apple is readying a “phablet” iPhone for a 2015 release so it can finally compete with Samsung’s popular Galaxy Note series of oversized mobile phones.

But the large screen iPhone 6 that Apple is widely expected to announce on September 9 will have a screen that measures 5.5 inches, not 5.5 feet.

So no, I did not find a prototype iPhone phablet in a Dumpster this morning.

Too big even for Samsung

What I did find was the slightly mangled remains of a cardboard and construction paper replica of the Apple iOS SpringBoard or home screen, complete with painstakingly handmade icons for 24 popular apps including Facebook, Pinterest, Google Maps, Instagram and Hootsuite.

Apple has thus far ignored the phablet form factor leaving Samsung to dominate the niche with larger and larger Galaxy-branded smartphones.

Last year one reviewer compared Samsung’s uber phablet, the Galaxy Mega, to a mattress pad. But the Mega actually measures a measly 6.6 inches by 3.5 inches. That’s nothing compared to this trashed work of art, which measured no less than two feet by three feet.

I had no Idea why some person or persons made it in the first place. And then after all the very fine work they did, I had to really wonder why they decided to just throw it away.

Perhaps it was because the live Calendar app was broken and showing the date for a Saturday in June.

Or perhaps this is a replica of an iPhone 4s and they’ve since upgraded to a replica of a 5s.
