In the latest post on his LiveJournal page, author George RR Martin says fans of his A Song of Ice and Fire series might be treated to a new volume next year.

Although Martin cautions eager readers that he is "months away" from finishing The Winds of Winter, the sixth book in the series, he adds that he is close to halfway done a new two-book series.

Called Fire and Blood, the books will chronicle the history of the Targaryen rule of Westeros from Aegon's initial conquest right up until Robert's Rebellion, which occurs shortly before the events of A Game of Thrones, the first book in the author's other Westeros series.

“Whether Winds or the first volume of Fire and Blood will be the first to hit the bookstores is hard to say at this juncture, but I do think you will have a Westeros book from me in 2018 … and who knows, maybe two. A boy can dream,” he quipped.

Until then, fans will have to be content with the October release of The Book of Swords, which features an all-new Westeros story by Martin.
