VIFF 2013 review: Max Beckmann: Departure

(Germany/Austria)

    1 of 2 2 of 2

One of the most influential painters of the early 20th century, Beckmann was a social satirist in the George Grosz vein, with more surrealist tendencies. This rather ramshackle doc makes the case that he should be better remembered, but the talking-head testimonials from experts and museum curators are of variable quality. And the movie doesn’t give you enough about his personal life to clue you into his deeper psychological currents.
