VIFF 2013 review: Breaking Earth: Susumu Shingu Working With the Wind

(Germany/U.K.)

Director Thomas Riedelsheimer once again employs his exquisite observational eye to profile an artist, as he did with Andy Goldsworthy (Rivers and Tides) and Evelyn Glennie (Touch the Sound). This time, it’s Japanese sculptor and architect Susumu Shingu, whose wind- and water-powered kinetic works are hypnotic and playful tributes to nature. Shingu travels the world, from Italy to Mexico, on a quest to find a place to build an environmentally sensitive, arts-oriented community. An elegant and meditative documentary.
