VIFF 2013 review: The Machine Which Makes Everything Disappear

(Georgia/Germany)

    1 of 2 2 of 2

One by one, young Georgians (between the ages of 15 and 25) reveal their dreams, heartaches, and personal stories to the camera at an open audition. Director Tinatin Gurchiani guides their confessions with questions, using their answers as points of departure from which to document snapshots of them living their varied lives. Despite a gentle start, the emotional gravity almost imperceptibly snowballs in intensity, from a young boy who wants to be a movie star to a 25-year-old governor of an aging village to a girl who seeks out the mother who abandoned her. The patient shall be rewarded.

      Vancity Theatre, October 7 (4:45 p.m.) and 11 (8:45 p.m.)
