VIFF 2015: Jafar Panahi’s Taxi an enjoyable ride

    1 of 2 2 of 2

      Jafar Panahi’s Taxi (Iran)

Judging from the traffic patterns seen through a dashcam (and some other small cameras), Tehran is not a very orderly place. Traffic lights, crosswalks, turn lanes—all mere suggestions in the travels captured by the This Is Not a Film director, daylighting as a cab driver to get around his current ban. This semi-scripted, semi-improvised tour (aka Taxi Tehran) finds Panahi chatting with old friends, family members, and strangers, all taking stock of life in a place where freedoms are always under siege.

For all that, it’s quite funny at times and very enjoyable throughout.

      Playhouse, October 1 (4:15 p.m.) and 3 (6:45 p.m.)
