VIFF 2014: Dominguinhos honours a musical master

      Dominguinhos (Brazil)

A lesser-known strain in Brazilian music is celebrated in this profile of the late José Domingos de Morais (the title is his diminutive nickname). A master of the rustic, accordion-driven sound of the outback called Forró, he had an impoverished childhood, hazily reconstructed here; things pick up when the teenaged prodigy falls under the spell of Luiz Gonzaga, who left behind some excellent footage. Latter-day collaborations between Dominguinhos and slightly younger fans from the word of jazz, pop, and bossa nova are of uneven quality but add up to a meaningful, melodious tribute.
