VIFF 2012 review: Dreams for Sale

(Japan)

It’s a bit like a less murderous Monsieur Verdoux directed by a less sunny Aki Kaurismäki in contemporary Japan. In any case, Miwa Nishikawa centres her plot on the machinations of a pair of ruined restaurateurs who decide that bogus offers of marriage just might be the road back to marital bliss and financial prosperity. Doubtless a timely fable, although it will probably seem too cynical to many.
