A Man Named Scott: The Kid Cudi Story

Scott Mescudi—a.k.a. Kid Cudi—broke ground in hip-hop by working through his mental-health issues in his music, rapping about depression and anxiety in a way that conveyed resolve rather than despair. Now documentary filmmaker Robert Alexander (HBO’s The Shop) looks at Cudi’s life and career since the release of his revolutionary 2009 LP Man on the Moon: The End Of Day—and the profound connection he’s forged with his audience, even as it costs him a piece of himself. November 5

Pharma Bro

Amazon is rolling out a lot of documentaries this month—and, really, good for them—but the one we’re most interested to see is this look at the odyssey of Martin Shkreli from pop-culture specialist Brent Hodge (I Am Chris Farley, Who Let the Dogs Out). Shkreli, as you may recall, is the smirking Brooklyn hedge-fund manager who personified vulture capitalism when his pharmaceutical company acquired the license for a much-prescribed AIDS therapeutic and raised the price by 5,500 percent. And if that wasn’t bad enough, never forget: he also disrespected the Wu-Tang Clan. November 11

The Wheel of Time

It seems like we get a new epic fantasy series every month, and this time it’s Amazon’s turn: based on the novels by Robert Jordan, The Wheel of Time is set in a world where magic exists, but its use is restricted to the powerful women of the Aes Sedai. Rosamund Pike stars as Moiraine Damodred, a member of the order who gathers five young people to determine which one of them might be the new incarnation of Dragon, a warrior prophesized to save humanity from the return of the Dark One—or destroy it in the process. (There are 14 books in the series, so we probably shouldn’t expect an answer this season.) New episodes Fridays from November 19

The Great (Season 2)

Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult return for more historically questionable antics in the second season of Tony McNamara’s giddy tale of Catherine the Great and Peter III, whose rocky Russian romance is frequently derailed by courtly scheming and the occasional assassination attempt. (McNamara cowrote The Favourite, so he knows a little something about that sort of thing.) Expect more of the same, against even more lavish backdrops—and this season, Gillian Anderson shows up to complicate things even further as Catherine’s mother. And if you were wondering whether the series would grow respectable with age, there’s an episode called Dickhead this season. So, no. November 20
