Cannabis crusader Dana Larsen runs for NDP on the Sunshine Coast

The NDP's on-again, off-again dalliance with the cannabis-legalization movement appears to be back on track.

The federal party has nominated Dana Larsen, the former editor of Cannabis Culture magazine, to carry the NDP banner in West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country.

Larsen, the senior manager of the Vancouver Seed Bank and a longtime  associate of marijiana  crusader  Marc Emery, lives in Roberts Creek.

In 2004, Emery told the Straight in an interview that he was ticked off at NDP leader Jack Layton for not condemning a judge's ruling that Emery should spend 92 days in jail for sharing a joint.

In the same interview, Emery praised Vancouver East NDP MP Libby Davies as the only federal politician who spoke out in his defence.

The following year, Emery told the Straight that Layton visited his home to seek his support. Emery has been a financial contributor to the federal NDP and to Adriane Carr of the Green party. And now, an ardent opponent of prohibition, Larsen,  is a nominated NDP candidate running against the only Green MP in Canadian history, businessman Blair Wilson.

As recently as last July, however, Emery was threatening to sink former NDP MLA Gregor Robertson's mayoral ambitions after Robertson told the Globe and Mail that police should have more resources to go after grow-ops.

Emery told the Straight that he might run for mayor against Robertson.
