Andrea Reimer says scaled-back car-free Sundays would still be a "win"

Vision Vancouver councillor Andrea Reimer has said she is still upbeat even though her plans for three months of car-free Sundays in three different locations may be curtailed.

“Staff did a fantastic and thorough job of cataloguing the barriers and the opportunities,” Reimer told the Straight by phone yesterday (March 3). “If we can move forward in any way this summer, that would be a win.”

Vision’s platform promised a summer trial of car-free Sundays on selected streets in 2009. COPE’s policy is to support and encourage neighbourhoods across the city to hold car-free festivals, and create citywide car-free zones and car-free days.

At yesterday’s transportation and traffic committee meeting, council unanimously approved a recommendation in deputy city engineer Peter Judd’s staff report that the city consider trials of less than three months.

Council also approved a staff recommendation that it consult more with business-improvement associations, community groups, and other stakeholders before proceeding with three months of car-free Sundays in three locations.

I think she would have been referred to as a snake oil salesperson in days gone by. No wonder nothing substantive gets done when the drivel is always about this type of thing.
