Winter storm closes park restaurant

It has been a lousy week for Daniel Frankel, owner of the Prospect Point Café in Stanley Park, as well as his restaurant staff who were hoping to do well with holiday tips.

Frankel told the Straight that the December 15 hurricane-force winds caused damage to the roof and excess water in the kitchen, resulting in the ongoing closure of the restaurant. On December 19, he said that he expects the business to reopen within a week. “We do have business-interruption insurance,” Frankel said, “but obviously that will affect our rates in the future.”

Frankel, who owns four other restaurants, said that his 400 employees planned to make donations to B.C.’s Children’s Hospital rather than give each other gifts. The company matches these donations dollar for dollar, he added.

“In light of what’s transpired with the near-hurricane conditions, we’re actually going to split that now between the B.C. Children’s Hospital and the tree fund that the Vancouver park board has set up,” Frankel said. “A lot of us work in the park. It’s very near and dear to us.”

Donations of $50 or more are tax-deductible. For more information, contact Josie Riebe, the park board’s manager of fundraising and development, at josie.riebe @vancouver.ca .
