News for Youse: Report condemns RCMP, Canucks win again, and Keira Knightley censored

Human Rights Watch report slams northern Mounties  New York–based Human Rights Watch has called for a national commission of inquiry after issuing an 89-page report. It maintains that the RCMP failed to protect aboriginal women and girls from violence in northern communities along B.C.'s "Highway of Tears". The document also cites claims that police have acted violently and raped women.

RCMP defends itself against report  The Mounties have responded that they take the Human Rights Watch report seriously, but emphasize that not one allegation of police officers' abuse has been brought forward to be investigated.

Throne speech emphasizes liquefied-natural-gas exports  The B.C. Liberal government plans to create a B.C. Prosperity Fund with money generated through the export of liquefied natural gas. This isn't expected to begin until 2015 or 2016.  

NDP calls throne speech "empty"  NDP Leader Adrian Dix has called the B.C. Liberals' promised prosperity fund "a deliberate distraction from their mismanagement of fiscal issues, such as hiding B.C. Hydro's expenses in deferral accounts".

Radio station owner defends himself  Radio India owner Maninder Gill—the recipient of a Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal from MP Jinny Sims—has told media outlets that he acted in self-defence against pro-Khalistan extremists in 2010 in a shooting incident at the Guru Nanak temple. Gill faces several criminal charges.

SARS-linked virus spreads  Officials say a British resident with no recent history of travel has become the 11th person to develop an unusual virus linked to SARS.

Rogue cop may be dead  Police are trying to confirm if Christopher Dorner is the dead person found in a cabin near Big Lake, California. Dorner is the former Los Angeles police officer who issued a manifesto threatening to kill many of his former colleagues and their family members.

Six reporters arrested  Scotland Yard's phone-hacking investigation has led to the arrest of three male and three female reporters. More details are available here.

Canucks win again  With Roberto Luongo in goal, the Vancouver Canucks posted their sixth consecutive win, defeating the Minnesota Wild 2-1 at Rogers Arena.

Keira Knightley ad banned during kids' shows  The U.K.-based Advertising Standards Authority has ruled that a Chanel ad featuring Keira Knightley can't be broadcast during children's programs because of its sexually explicit content.
