Homeless in Vancouver: Always call the police if you see a distressed person?

For no particular reason as I was making my way down Manitoba Street toward West Broadway Avenue this afternoon, I looked up at one point.

I ended up staring right into the wide eyes of a guy who was framed in the window of a second-floor condo.

He appeared to be yelling for all he was worth.

Sometimes, I swear, I can be such a blockhead!

I’m not much of a lip-reader but I’d almost swear that he was mouthing the words “Lego of me!—or something like that—over and over again.

Those eyes look blank with terror.

I laughed it off at the time, thinking that he was just playing with me but now I’m not so sure. How could I be? If that was a genuine cry for help then I let him down terribly.

Probably I should’ve just run to the nearest payphone, called 9-1-1 and let the police figure it out. That’s what they’re paid for right?
