Dogs on public transit? It's already happening!

    1 of 1 2 of 1

The Straight ran a brief item yesterday (May 14) about whether or not leashed pets should be allowed on public transit in Vancouver.

It looks like some passengers have already decided to take matters into their own, um, strollers.

The above was shot on a #14 westbound on Broadway this morning.

(Apologies for the blurred phone pic. Both dog and toddler gave the photog a serious stink-eye.)

Unless a dog is a certified assistance dog they should not be allowed in any stores except veterinary clinics! And no, not even pet food stores. I am sick and tired of people bringing their dogs into stores. I almost hope that someone gets bit and a large chain gets sued into oblivion so all stores will stop allowing this. I even remember the indignant look one dog owner gave a clerk who had the audacity to tell her to take her dog outside...of a food store!! Enough. If you're going shopping, or anywhere else the public gathers in an indoor space such as transit, leave your dog at home.

It's my rule to make snide comments to people who think their dog (or any pet for that matter) is allowed in a store especially if it's a food store or restaurant. I have no problem with pets in cages on transit but anything otherwise and you will hear about it from me.

Seems that since it works for Transport for London that serves a population of 8.3 million people plus visitors in London, England and Toronto Transit Commission that serves population of 2.79 million people plus visitors if Vancouver wants to be a world class city they should welcome people and their pets too and allow them to have the Right of Freedom of Association, Right of Mobility and Right of Equality without discrimination, as our Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms Guarantees us. While we are at it - the State of California now allows dogs on the patios of restaurants and I understand British pubs say, "Pets Are Welcome Here", France, Germany, Italy and Austria allow pets inside the restaurants and on the chairs! Since even our people are not dying as a result of the pets on the public transit elsewhere and on restaurant patios with pets and even inside airplanes, restaurants with pets why are restaurants and places where people eat and drink and locals and visitors, the people who are hungry and thirsty, being unnecessarily cited? It is right that the minority should rule the majority?

According to the Canadian Veterinary Association more people own one or more pets than those who do not, however that is not a true reflection of those who love pets (and getting free pet therapy) but are not allowed by landlords or other reason to have what they dearly love and want - a companion to love and who loves being with them and in some cases, gives them a reason to live or the will to live during difficult times. If we remove everything that people don't like - we'd have no trees, no music of any kind, etc.

Gov. Jerry Brown -- owner of Sutter, California's "first dog" and an adorable Welsh corgi to boot -- has signed into law a bill making it perfectly legal to bring your dog out to dinner with you. (No word yet on whether the governor and Sutter are planning a night out to celebrate.)

"I wish everyone 'bone-appetit,'" Mariko Yamada, D-Davis, the Assembly member who championed the bill, said in a statement. On her Facebook page, the lawmaker added: "Amidst all the horrific and depressing news around us, I hope this bill helps make people a little happier, and businesses who wish to accommodate diners with dogs safe from being unnecessarily cited.
