Same-sex marriage may be legal in Canada and homosexuality was decriminalized in our country in 1969, but there's still work to be done. Yes, Vancouver is a queer-friendly city, but that doesn't mean discrimination is nonexistent.

Qmunity executive director Dara Parker and Vancouver Pride Society president Tim Richards appeared on Unfiltered with Jill Krop on February 24 to talk about the homophobic attack that took place at MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert's office in the West End on February 21.

Both discussed how perceptions from those outside the community may differ from those who live within it.

Richards pointed out that dealing with homophobia is still often the day-to-day reality for many people, who may resort to being self-censoring (or self-closeting, as Parker puts it).

Parker talked about how there are still areas of the city that many queer people feel unsafe in and that many micro-aggressions against queer people take place all the time in the city.

Also, if you've ever wondered what a "superqueer" is, Parker explains it (along with the usage of the term "queer").
