Aye! Queen approves same-sex marriage in Scotland

After all the negative news about antigay legislation in countries like Russia, India, Nigeria, and Uganda, how about some positive news?

Although it's mostly a formality, Queen Elizabeth II's signature for Scotland's Marriage and Civil Partnership Act 2014 is the final step for same-sex marriage to become a law. The Queen gave her royal stamp of approval on March 12 (announced by Parliament on March 13). Same-sex marriages will begin by the end of the year.

Although Scotland's two main churches were against it, Scottish Parliament passed the bill 105 to 18 in a landslide victory for LGBT rights on February 4.

Meanwhile, same-sex marriage in England and Wales, passed on July 16, 2013, comes into effect on March 29.

In other signs of change and progress, the Queen also broke her 62-year silence on LGBT issues by sending her best wishes to the London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard on its 40th anniversary on March 6.

It is too bad that Lady Di isn't around to see this.
