While anxiety obviously isn't something exclusive to gay, bisexual, and men who have sex with men (MSM), growing up queer in a heterosexual-oriented society doesn't help matters.

External or internalized homophobia, discrimination or attacks, feeling isolated or excluded, being closeted or invisible, feelings of shame or embarrassment, and other such issues can compound stress levels or affect mental health.

The world of dating apps, hookups, and sexual health concerns can potentially add uncertainty and additional worries.

A new series of workshops are designed specifically to address the needs to queer men who want to tackle issues about anxiety.

Health Initiative for Men's mental health team is holding a four-week series to address experiences of anxiety, such as uncontrollable thoughts, difficulty in decision making, or feelings of panic.

This series will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, starting on May 3. It is important note that it is not being held at HIM's Health Centre in New Westminster but at the Anvil Centre (777 Columbia Street, New Westminster).

Each session will address a different topic, including the causes of anxiety, how oppression and stigma feed into anxiety, self-care and anxiety management, and mindfulness.

As attendance is open, participants can attend some or all sessions.

The cost is free or by donation.
