The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers is celebrating World Press Freedom Day today.

It comes at a time when a free media is under attack in numerous countries, including Syria, where American journalist Marie Colvin and photographer Remi Ochlik were recently killed when the military attacked the building they were reporting from.

Last year, UNESCO condemned the killings of 62 journalists around the world, whose deaths were attributed to their jobs.

"As media moves online, more online journalists, including bloggers, are being harassed, attacked, and killed for their work," UNESCO's director-general and the UN secretary-general said in a joint statement. "They must receive the same protection as traditional media workers."

Below, you'll see photos from places around the world where press freedom is in jeopardy.
