My grandma passed

and does not want her ashes to be in Europe with her husband’s. They were married for over 50 years and he set up a tomb for them in Hungary and everything, but she decided she just wants hers in the ocean with her son here in Vancouver. Imagine staying married to someone for that long and then not wanting to be buried with them. Kind of makes me glad I’m single!!

My parents were married over 50 years too, but they weren’t happily married, just comfortable & resigned. That and seeing so many other people who are/were unhappily attached (& often eventually separated) made me feel insecure in the relationships I had. Finally I just decided to stay single 11 years ago.

It’s so strange

to me that anyone would just stay in a marriage for that long if they’re not happy. Afraid to grow in life but not after death?? It’s really all the same and life is the time to grab the bull by the horns people!!

So?

Being married doesn’t mean you’re one person. My parents wanted to be buried in places that were special to each of them.

Resting Place

Even if I was happily married to someone, I would not want to be encased in a tomb with them. My happy resting place is floating in the ocean in the fresh air and sunshine.

We're all individuals, and marriage can't change that. True love in marriage is a rare thing. Most marriages are practical -- satisfying reproduction urges, gaining social/financial stability and tax refunds, following cultural norms to fit in socially, basic companionship, etc. In some cultures, it's still about property transfer, dowries. As it was, as it ever shall be. Single, married -- both have benefits and drawbacks. Unless there are legal consequences, you can do whatever you want with ashes -- grandma no longer has a choice. If it makes you feel better to have your grandparents' remains together, then do it. Or are you afraid of ghosts?
