James Deen's image as sensitive feminist-friendly porn star in jeopardy in face of rape allegations

With a bombshell interview from Joanna Angel coming days after a rape allegation from Stoya, it would appear that James Deen has suddenly become porn’s biggest pariah since Marc Wallice. And don’t pretend that all of those names mean nothing to you—if you’ve got Internet access at home, chances are pretty good that you’ve used the worldwide web for something other than buying new shoes on Amazon.

In a radio interview on Sirius yesterday, Angel described Deen—who is a former boyfriend—as an “asshole” who forced violent sex upon her at home, controlled what she did with her body (including banning her from masturbating), and demeaned her to the point where she eventually had to seek therapy.

None of the claims by Stoya or Angel have been proven in court.

Angel, who runs her own pornography empire called Burning Angel, told The Jason Ellis show that at one point Deen dragged her into the bathroom at home and “started dunking my head in the water [in the sink] while he was fucking me. It started to feel like forever.”

After letting her up for air, at which point she was crying, Angel alleges that she was thrown on the floor, at which point Deen told her “You’re a horrible submissive. I’m bored. I’m going to go fuck someone else.’ And he just left the house.”

The Angel interview comes after another of Deen's former girlfriends, Stoya, accused him of raping her in a November 29 tweet, stating: “James Deen held me down and fucked me while I said no, stop, used my safe word. I just can’t nod and smile when people bring him up anymore.”

One of the biggest names in porn, Stoya is also regarded as one of the smartest, penning sex-positive essays and columns for publications ranging from the New York Times to Vice, and running her own movie company titled Trenchcoatx.

Over the past decade, Deen has established himself as the biggest male star in what your grandparents used to call blue movies. Fans of his work? There are legions, which explains profiles everywhere from GQ to 20/20.

Deen has long portrayed himself as a sensitive, feminist-friendly porn star. His reputation has also been built on his not looking like someone who spends half his day in the gym, and the other half in a tanning booth. As Wikipedia notes: “He has gained attention due to his relatively slender build, lack of tattoos and everyman appeal, bucking the stereotypical image of hypermasculine male actors in the pornography industry.”

Since Stoya’s allegations, a half-dozen adult movie stars have come forward to allege they’ve been either raped or otherwise assaulted by Deen, sometimes on-camera, and sometimes off.

The actor’s lone response to this has been a couple of Tweets, including his last one on November 29 where he stated: “I respect women and I know and respect limits both professionally and privately.” Since then, he’s been dropped by The Frisky, where he wrote a sex column, and porn companies Kink and Evil Angel.

Angel’s perspective is a little different. “More than once I woke up to him choking me in his sleep,” she told Sirius. "He really is a scary person. He got more violent and scary the more famous he got ... He knows there’s something wrong with him."
