Review: “Mareya Shot, Keetha Goal: Make the Shot” puts a South Asian spin on our national game

For anyone thinking the South Asian community’s love and passion for hockey is something new in Canada, here are 12 words: “Bonino, Bonino, Bonino, Bonino, Bonino, Bonino, Bonino, Bonino, Bonino, Bonino, Bonino, Nick Bonnnnnniiiiiiiinnnnooooooooooooooooo.” With that one call, during a 2016 Pens/Sharks game on Hockey Night In Canada: Punjabi Edition, Calgary-raised Sikh broadcaster Harnarayan Singh became a viral star in the Great White North, eventually landing a full-time gig on the English network.

Fittingly, Singh is one of the many South Asian hockey disciples featured in Mareya Shot, Keetha Goal: Make the Shot, explaining that, as a kid who looked different growing up in Alberta, Canada’s national game provided an instant way to bond with those around him.

The real stars in this sharply shot documentary are, however, the kids: BC Junior Hockey prospects Arjun Bawa, Kayden Sadhra-Kang, Arvin Atwal, and Arshdeep Bains. Directors Baljit Sangra and Nilesh Patel follow the four as they pursue their dreams of making the NHL, with some of the most inspiring and illuminating moments coming from the moments off the ice.

Poignant doesn’t begin to describe Atwal’s emotional grandmother hugging her grandson as he prepares to decamp for an overseas team in Slovakia. And moments don’t come much more beautiful than the father of Bains reacting to the news that his son has been signed by the Canucks.

Mareya Shot, Keetha Goal: Make the Shot’s directors also ask hard questions, including addressing the issue of racism in a traditionally white game. Those who play, coach, call, and follow the sport all chime in, and while the kids on centre ice spotlight acquit themselves well, it’s Harbs Bains—the fantastically quotable owner of the Lake Cowichan Kraken and a longtime coach—who proves to be a suprise star.

You know how there’s nothing greater than getting even after taking a number in hockey? Bains makes it clear he has learned the importance of waiting for the right moment—that being just one of the many great lessons here.

Mareya Shot, Keetha Goal: Make the Shot plays Saturday (October 7) at International Village as part of the Vancouver International Film Festival. The directors and crew will be in attendance for a question and answer session.
